David's Dragon
ONCE UPON A TIME, there was a boy named Sam who looked upon the stars through the tiny window in his room in the slums of the City of Lockes, dreaming for more than what his life had become. Little did he know, the stars were watching him back, waiting for the day his destiny would be revealed. The stars whispered to each other about this boy. Someâthe furthest and the oldest of the stars, gods who created the universe simply because they were boredâdidnât think he had what it took. How could the fate of the world rest on the shoulders of one so young and foolish?
But there was one who fought for him above all others, one who believed in Sam Haversford with every fiber of its being. And though young itself, this constellation of stars knew about the bonds of loyalty and friendship, of unending love and the power of sacrifice. Paths, this constellation knew, could be set in stone, but stone could just as easily crumble.
This constellation was known as the Star Dragon.
Davidâs Dragon.
The old gods cried, Heâs just a child! Even if his magic is extraordinary, how could he possibly hope to conquer what will come?
To which the Star Dragon replied, He will, because he wonât be alone. Heâll have friends by his side, those who will do anything for him.
The old gods muttered as they twinkled, but eventually, they subsided. Fine, they grumbled. Be it on your head, then. Should the world collapse, weâll start again from the beginning. A new world. Weâve done it before. We can do it again.
But the Star Dragon had faith. This worldâthough messy and chaoticâhad moments of beauty so breathtaking it threatened to bring even the strongest to their knees. Even in darkness, hope was a weapon, if only one knew how to wield it.
In the end, the brave boy from the slums accepted his destiny, and though he suffered immeasurable loss, he stood brave and true, surrounded by those who loved him most. He battled the Dark Wizard Myrinâ¦and won.
It was then this powerful wizard made a wish upon the stars, and as the Star Dragon ascended back into the heavens, he came upon a man who hadnât yet passed beyond the veil.
It is done, the Star Dragon said.
To which the man replied, You were a little rude to him, if Iâm being honest.
The Star Dragon snorted. Eh. Heâll survive.
He is the better part of all of us.
He is, the Star Dragon said. And he wishes for you.
The man smiled, though his eyes were filled with tears. Truly?
Yes, the Star Dragon said. His wish will be granted, a gift for all heâs done. It is not your time yet, Morgan of Shadows. Never forget.
Morgan said, I wonât. Iâ¦thank you. For everything. And then he began to shine as if he were a star himself. But instead of taking his place in the sky, he fell back toward the earth, alive once more.
The Star Dragon climbed higher and higher, searching for the voice that brought peace to his soul.
